Bookbinding - I Am The Sewing In A Well Bound Book

You cannot see me, yet I am the single most important element in quality bookbinding. There are several ways to sew a book; the best is only an option when the pages of the book come as folded sections. The method is known as "all along" sewing, perhaps because the sewing thread travels almost all along the inside of the folded sections. Prior to sewing in this style, the block of loose... Bookbinding - I Am The Headband Of A Well Bound Book

I would guess that few people outside of craft bookbinding know what a headband is and where it is to be found. If one were to hold a book by its spine with the front edge of the bookbinding pointing towards you, and look along the top edge of the book, as far back as the spine, your eyes would fasten on the headband, if fitted. But it is no use using expensive vellum as a bookbinding material, unless all the other factors that go... (posted by Richard 1 year 258 days ago.)
Bookbinding: I Am The Boards Of A Well Bound Book

To anyone outside the craft of bookbinding, the boards of a well bound book are an unknown, hidden from view; something must lie under the cover, but quite what? What I am not, is a bookbinding material called "strawboard". Yellow in colour, it is made from chopped straw, and full of what is called lignin, a plant acid. It may also have impurities in the form of fine particles of sand or earth within... (posted by Richard 1 year 258 days ago.)
What Comes After The Swift Cold Gluing Machine?

About 8 years ago J.M.Campbell of Glasgow went out of business. For many years they had been the manufacturer of the Swift Cold Gluing Machine. The Swift cold gluing machine was a reliable old workhorse, simple in design and operation; it was used by many thousands of people around the world. You can still find a Swift cold gluing machine second hand, but they are rare and you have to be in the... (posted by Richard 1 year 267 days ago.)
